A number of City employers now offer 'returnship' programmes - working on the same principle as the more traditional internship or apprenticeship, returnships seek to offer a group of applicants an extended interview process through short fixed-term placements. Typically, whilst they may offer a salary for the duration of the placement, these returnships do not guarantee a firm job offer at the end, with permanent roles available for only a proportion of participants. 'Direct entry' programmes, by contrast, offer a permanent role upon successful completion however these are significantly more rare.
